One of the organizers wrote an article about the show and used pictures of two of my pieces. It’s in the August 2009 issue of Bound & Lettered. The books that were in the show are in this blog. They are: Florida Flora Box (in color! on the inside back cover) and Florida Saints, which actually looks pretty good in black and white).

Incidently, the other piece from that show, I Look at Florida, was later in a show in Slidell, Louisianna called Topophilia, Love of Place. The New Orleans Times-Picayune had an article about the show and they said that my front cover flap was "clever."

That was a charmed show for me: I sold my first piece, Florida Saints.lezbaghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08406558636367007435noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1083622983078732071.post-65663902273399916512008-11-08T11:15:00.000-08:002008-11-08T11:17:33.698-08:00A Family Story my mother told me<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 263px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BRz5CQmPzLE/SRXlcfw4ZII/AAAAAAAABlg/v9qSj8rQZmg/s400/FamilyStory3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266367617005282434" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 232px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BRz5CQmPzLE/SRXlcfQ3SgI/AAAAAAAABlY/93KhyQubYXY/s400/FamilyStory2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266367616870992386" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 274px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BRz5CQmPzLE/SRXlbzVmufI/AAAAAAAABlQ/GJZK0qBoJKY/s400/FamilyStory1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266367605079718386" />
Text: My great grandmother, Mary Ann Morahan was born in 1865 in New Jersey. Both her parents were born in Ireland and immigrated in the 1860s.

At 14, she worked as a servant. She married Geroge Johnson in 1885 and moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey. They had two boys and two girls.

Her husband sent the boys to college; they became engineers. Although he could afford it, he refused to pay for the girls to Elizabeth Normal School, the local teacher's.

She took home mattresses to sew in the parlor to earn the money to send the girls to school. Her husband was so embarrassed by the situation that he relented and paid for both daughters to go to college.

They were my great aunts Edna and Ella, who were school teachers until they retired.

Artist Statement: My mother did indeed tell me this story about her grandmother sewing mattresses. The story underscores the power of education and my great grandmother's determination for her daughters to have the same opportunities as her sons. She is just one of many strong-willed women in my family.

The pages are plaster and gauze, using the wire-edge method of binding (although it's bamboo skewers instead of wire).lezbaghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08406558636367007435noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1083622983078732071.post-78974810930394836432008-10-23T11:49:00.000-07:002008-10-23T12:13:29.900-07:00Parrot Saints<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 307px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BRz5CQmPzLE/SQDHV6lJLGI/AAAAAAAABjc/AnCFFDkQS70/s400/ParrotSaints3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260423544084966498" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 294px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BRz5CQmPzLE/SQDHVe_S_0I/AAAAAAAABjU/JbR8MIASVdI/s400/ParrotSaints2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260423536678469442" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 343px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BRz5CQmPzLE/SQDHVMgp3NI/AAAAAAAABjM/NBawivYYhAY/s400/ParrotSaints1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260423531718106322" />

2008.
